Annular Eclipse

There will be an annular eclipse of the sun centred on Madrid on the Monday morning (3 Oct.) 8:56 UT lasting for 4 minutes approximately. An annular eclipse differs from a total eclipse in that the Moon appears too small to completely cover the Sun. As a result, the Moon is surrounded by an intensely brilliant ring or annulus formed by the noneclipsed outer perimeter of the Sun's disk. The solar corona is not visible during annular eclipses. Furthermore, a solar filter or projection is needed to observe all phases of an annular eclipse! (From http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEmono/ASE2005/ASE2005.html where more details can be obtained).

This is a tour of central Madrid by coach with an official guide to explain and describe the sites as well as the typical custom and characteristics of Madrid City. It will follow the areas of Madrid developed during the reigns of the Borborn and Austrian kings as well as more modern districts. Participants will see many of the elegant squares and avenues, for instance the Plaza de Oriente where the Royal Palace is situated, Gran Via, a busy commercial street in the heart of the city, and the Paseo de la Castellana, a broad tree-lined avenue that divides the city between east and west. Finally the tour will arrive at the Prado Museum where participants will be able to view many of the masterpieces on show there. The Prado Museum is the most famous museum in Spain and it holds a large collection of paintings and sculptures by Spanish masters such as El Greco, Velaquez, and Goya and international masters such as Rafeal, Rubens and Caravaggio.

Tour B

A Visit to the Royal Palace followed by a Guided Tour of old Madrid.

This tour will begin with a visit to the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace, located close to the city centre, was built during the XVIII century by the Bourbon kings. About 50 of its many rooms are opened to the public. These include the principal stairway, the Salon de Alabarderos, the Hall of Columns, the Gala Dining Room, the Music Room, and the Throne room. The palace is still used for official occasions and for Royal receptions. Visitors can also walk about its large courtyard and visit the armoury museum or the royal pharmacy.

After the visit, participants will be brought on a guided tour to the oldest parts of Madrid City located in an area known as Madrid of the Austrians. It has been restored in recent years and has become a very popular area of the city with its narrow streets and hidden squares, as well as inviting tapa bars, cafes, and restaurants. The conference dinner will be held in a well-known and very popular restaurant in this area. After the tour participants can return to the Hotel Convencion by coach.
